               Financial transactions have existed throughout history, helping buyers and sellers exchange goods based on their needs. To help improve control over the exchanges, people have used ledgers. As technology and globalization evolved, goods and services exchanges have grown exponentially. Therefore, tracking it has become more important than ever. To assist in the process, a check register template is now available for download.

How to use

               To start using the check register template, go to the main table and add the beginning balance similar to the sample below. Then, add all the line items that have occurred so far, include the date, check #, description, category, debit/credit and clearing. Track the changes to the check register in the summary available at the top left.

Summary

  • Today’s Date – Automatically determines today’s date
  • Beginning Balance – Uses the first entry of the check register to determine the beginning balance.
  • Current Balance – Formula to determine the ending balance based on the last entry.
  • Outstanding Debit – Sums all the withdrawals that have yet to clear by cross-referencing the checkmarks.
  • Outstanding Credit – Totals the number of deposits that have yet to clear.

Table

  • Date – Day that the transaction occurred. The column uses the format [day-month-year], yet, it is possible to change the format or insert the data in another format (e.g. Nov 10, 2021).
  • Check # – Number available on the check, usually at the bottom.
  • Description – A word or short sentence to determine the check register line item.
  • Category – A drop-down list containing a variety of categories that the line item may fall under. It is possible to add new categories as needed.
  • Withdrawal, Debit – Amount taken from the check register balance.
  • Deposit, Credit – Quantity added to the check register balance
  • [Checkmark] – Used to determine whether a check register line item has cleared. It contains a drop-down list with a blank and a checkmark.
  • Balance – Auto-filled column used to demonstrate the balance available in the check register for every new line item added to the solution. If the balance goes under $0, it will automatically flag in red, helping the user be reminded to top-up if necessary.

Print

               For those interested in printing a copy of the check register template, all that is needed is to press CTRL+P or go to File -> Print.
